Federal Return Filing Date and Tax Payment Date Extended

Filing Deadline. The due date for individuals to file a 2020 federal income tax return is now May 17, 2021 (rather than April 15, 2021).

Payment Deadline. The due date for individuals to pay federal income tax (including tax on self-employment income) for the 2020 tax year is now May 17, 2021 (rather than April 15, 2021). No interest or penalties will accrue so long as the tax is paid by May 17, 2020.

Automatic. These extensions are automatic. There is no form that must be filed with the IRS to qualify for the extensions.

Exceptions. These extensions do not apply to estimated tax payments for the 2021 tax year. Estimated tax payments are still due by April 15, 2021.

These extensions do not apply to state deadlines. At this writing, the deadline to file an individual return and pay the tax in Arizona is still April 15, 2021. However, in light of the federal changes, the Arizona Department of Revenue is working on and plans to issue guidance.
