James R. Blaufuss
James R. Blaufuss is an intellectual property attorney who advises businesses, inventors, and innovators on the development, protection, and management of patent and trademark portfolios in the United States and internationally. His practice focuses on domestic and international patent and trademark prosecution and encompasses a broad range of intellectual property matters, including patent and trademark drafting and prosecution, patent and trademark searches, patentability assessments, invalidity and infringement analyses, non-infringement/freedom-to-operate analyses, and state-of-the-art searches.
Jim’s technical experience spans a diverse range of industries and technologies, including vehicle suspensions, firearms, mechanical fasteners and locking systems, dental X-ray equipment, medical catheters and other medical devices, high-speed cutting systems, electrical discharge technologies, chemical cross-linking, plastics extrusion, material handling systems, and other mechanical and industrial technologies.
Drawing on his engineering background, Jim works with clients to understand their technologies, business objectives, and competitive environments and develop practical intellectual property strategies aligned with their goals. He assists clients with identifying and protecting inventions, evaluating patent rights and potential risks, pursuing patent and trademark protection, and navigating intellectual property issues that arise as businesses develop and commercialize products and technologies.
Before becoming an attorney, Jim worked as a process engineer for several companies across the United States. His engineering experience gives him firsthand insight into product development, manufacturing processes, technical problem-solving, and the practical considerations businesses face when bringing innovations to market. That perspective continues to shape his approach to intellectual property law, allowing him to communicate effectively with engineers, inventors, business leaders, and other stakeholders while developing strategies to protect valuable innovations and intellectual property assets.
