Kaitlyn E. Smith

Kaitlyn Smith is an Associate attorney in our Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental law practice group who works out of our Phoenix office. Her practice focuses on energy matters, including utilities, as well as water law.

Prior to joining our firm, Kaitlyn handled a broad range of civil litigation matters, including breach of contract claims, business torts and unfair competition claims,
real estate development, construction law disputes, defamation or reputation disputes, and lender liability or financing disputes. She has represented and advised companies, government agencies, and individuals in complex commercial litigation, civil rights, administrative, and investment dispute law matters. She has also assisted with resolving real estate disputes, and researched and drafted demand letters, settlement offers, and substantive motions.

Kaitlyn’s journey to working in environmental law has been driven by her passion for science. Kaitlyn was initially on the path to becoming a marine biologist but after taking a course in environmental law she found law as an exciting avenue to connect the science and policy worlds. In law school Kaitlyn received a Law and Sustainability certificate for focusing her course work in sustainability-related legal courses such as water law, energy law, and natural resources law. Kaitlyn now follows her passion as a sustainability lawyer. In her practice, she takes great pride in connecting and communicating with her clients directly to find the most effective and personalized solution.

Outside of the office, Kaitlyn unwinds through activities such as pickleball, volleyball, skiing, scuba diving, and playing with her dog Millie. At 13 countries and counting, Kaitlyn loves to travel with past adventures including studying abroad in Florence, Italy; a service trip to Guatemala; and conducting sustainable fisheries research in the Bahamas.
