Kaitlyn E. Smith
Kaitlyn Smith is an Associate attorney in the firm’s Natural Resources, Energy, and Environmental law practice group in Phoenix. Her practice focuses on water, energy, and environmental matters, with an emphasis on helping clients navigate Arizona’s complex regulatory landscape. Kaitlyn represents large industrial customers, renewable energy developers, water and wastewater utilities, residential developers, and other public- and private-sector clients in matters involving water rights, water resources, and utility regulation.
Kaitlyn’s water practice includes assisting clients with securing and protecting water supplies, addressing water policy and regulatory issues, and evaluating water-resource considerations for development, industrial, mining, energy, and utility projects. She works on matters involving Arizona’s assured and adequate water supply programs, groundwater and surface water rights, Central Arizona Project and Colorado River-related issues, and water supply due diligence. She also assists clients with complex water litigation and regulatory matters, including issues arising in Arizona’s general stream adjudications.
Kaitlyn also represents water and wastewater utilities in proceedings before the Arizona Corporation Commission. She is currently involved in efforts to streamline Arizona’s fragmented water and wastewater industries to improve service quality, promote regulatory efficiency, and support reliable utility service for customers.
Before joining the firm, Kaitlyn handled a diverse range of civil litigation matters, including breach of contract claims, business torts and unfair competition claims, construction disputes, defamation and reputation-related disputes, and lender liability and financing disputes. She has represented and advised companies, government agencies, and individuals in complex commercial litigation, civil rights, administrative, and investment dispute matters.
Outside the office, Kaitlyn enjoys reading, baking, and spending time with her dog, Millie. Having traveled to 15 countries, Kaitlyn also has a passion for exploring new places and cultures. Some of her past adventures include exploring Southeast Asia, participating in a service trip to Guatemala, and conducting sustainable fisheries research in the Bahamas.
