Melissa Oostmeyer
Melissa Oostmeyer is a Director in Fennemore’s Business & Finance practice group. She brings more than 25 years of experience as a business transactions attorney, with extensive in-house counsel experience across multiple industries—including manufacturing, energy, construction, and building materials. Melissa is a dedicated business partner who understands her clients’ operational goals and delivers practical, strategic solutions to complex legal issues.
Throughout her career, Melissa has served as in-house Senior Counsel for a Fortune 500 oil and gas corporation, Director and Division General Counsel for a Fortune 500 building materials corporation, outside General Counsel for a US division of medical devise manufacturing company, and as outside General Counsel for a commercial roofing business. In these roles, she advised on corporate, antitrust, construction, consumer direct marketing, franchising, and compliance matters. Melissa’s in-house background gives her unique insight into balancing business priorities with legal compliance, risk management, and long-term growth.
Melissa’s transactional experience includes drafting and negotiating a wide variety of commercial contracts, such as merger and acquisition agreements, commercial real estate transactions, supply and distribution agreements, master services agreements, and construction contracts. She has also represented franchisors, preparing franchise disclosure documents, negotiating franchise agreements, managing franchise compliance and development for U.S. and international operations, and developing strategic distribution and dealer models.
Melissa has successfully applied for and obtained tax abatements and government grants for a commercial manufacturing development project. She earned her law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, an M.B.A. from Eastern Michigan University, and a B.A. from Spring Arbor College. She also holds an international studies certificate earned while working as a goodwill ambassador in Japan through a Sister Cities International program.
In her free time, Melissa enjoys traveling, skiing, hiking, biking, running, and volunteering with people with disabilities.
